CSF Glucose

Special Precautions/Comments:

Do not send samples via pneumatic air tube.

Additional Information:

Glucose in the CSF is derived from the plasma via a specific membrane transporter and CSF glucose level is therefore proportional to plasma glucose level (approximately 60-70% of plasma level).

CSF glucose can be useful in the investigation of CNS infections, inflammatory conditions, impaired glucose transport and in hypoglycaemia. It is particularly useful in investigating the cause of meningitis. The majority of patients with bacterial meningitis have decreased CSF glucose levels, whereas those with viral meningitis usually have normal CSF glucose levels.
