Lipids (Fasting): Cholesterol, Triglyceride, HDL and LDL

Special Precautions/Comments:

For guidance on interpreting lipid results and investigating dyslipidaemia consult the Northern England Evaluation and Lipid Intensification (NEELIGuidelines.

Additional Information:

Fasting lipid profile includes:

  • Total cholesterol
  • Triglycerides
  • High density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol – often referred to as ‘good’ cholesterol
  • Low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol – often referred to as ‘bad’ cholesterol, calculated using the Freidewald equation (invalid if triglycerides >4.5 mmol/L, fasting samples only)
  • Non-HDL cholesterol – calculated by total cholesterol-HDL cholesterol (alternative to LDL on a non-fasting sample)
  • Cholesterol/HDL ratio – used to evaluate cardiovascular risk

Cardiovascular risk can be calculated using https://qrisk.org/three/

Lipid profiles may be added to lipaemic samples.
