Theophylline is a bronchodilator used in the treatment of asthma, apnoea, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.  

Therapeutic drug monitoring of theophylline allows the optimal therapeutic dose to be achieved by avoiding both subtherapeutic and toxic levels. It also allows compliance to be monitored.
